Medical Documentation & Referrals

The California Medical Association indicates that in order for a physician consultant to provide a medical cannabis recommendation, they must review prior medical records from a patient’s primary care doctor. The intention behind this requirement is to make sure that patients have the proper primary care as they are using medical cannabis. Primary care can be in the form of regular visits to a primary care doctor or an alternative health provider (chiropractor, acupuncturist, Naturopathic Doctor, herbalist, etc.) At least one visit must be completed each year with your primary care provider

Need Primary Care?

Often patients do not have a primary care. In other cases their previous visit was so long ago that contact information has disappeared and medical records are unattainable. In these cases, make the medical cannabis appointment anyway. Your examining MediCann doctor will review your proposed diagnosis, educate you on the proper use of medical cannabis for your condition and refer you to a primary care provider. You will be given a temporary (3 or 6 month) recommendation in order to have time to visit a primary care provider.

For your convenience MediCann offers primary care and alternative health providers at many locations. Please ask our Patient Service Associates at 866-632-6627 whether the location nearest you offers this service. After you visit with a primary care provider and MediCann receives the resulting medical documentation, your MediCann physician will extend your recommendation to complete the year at no extra charge to you. Please be aware the MediCann follows these guidelines in order to stay in compliance with the California Medical Association and provide with the most legitimate and verifiable recommendation.
